Southampton's historic building stock is less celebrated than its port heritage, but the city retains a remarkable collection of listed structures around its medieval walls and Old Town. Bargate, God's House Tower, the Tudor House Museum, and the surviving stretches of medieval flint and stone wall represent historic fabric of national importance — demanding specialist knowledge that goes well beyond standard architectural practice. The challenge in Southampton, as in many historic cities, is often how to make these buildings genuinely work for contemporary use: open-plan living within a tight historic footprint, modern kitchens and bathrooms installed without compromising irreplaceable fabric, new uses found for redundant historic spaces. That balance between preservation and practicality is something our practice understands from the inside.
