Mark Thomson
Mark joined James Clague Architects in 2025, bringing a thoughtful and strategic approach to residential design and planning. With qualifications from the Universities of Edinburgh & Kent, his academic background combines architectural design with a deep understanding of heritage and sustainability.
Mark’s background is rooted in high-end & sustainable residential projects & has developed expertise in navigating complex planning contexts, including developments outside settlement boundaries, within national landscapes, and on sites of special scientific interest. He works closely with clients to craft planning strategies and designs that offer the smoothest route to achieving their ambitions - balancing creativity with pragmatism.
Before relocating to Kent, Mark studied and worked in Edinburgh, contributing to local planning initiatives & entering international design competitions. Before returning to England, he also spent time in Malaysia with Article 25, supporting communities in the Borneo rainforest whose villages were under threat from a nationwide damming programme. This experience deepened his commitment to socially responsive and environmentally conscious design.
At James Clague, Mark continues to build on his interest in sustainable architecture and heritage-led development, contributing to projects that require careful negotiation between planning policy, site constraints, and client vision.
