Architects in Canterbury - RIBA Chartered Practice & Listed Building Specialists
Our founding office and home to the majority of our team. Canterbury is where James Clague Architects began, and where our specialism in historic buildings was developed — working daily alongside some of the finest medieval and period architecture in England.

Architects for East Kent
James Clague Architects started in Canterbury, and the city has shaped everything about how we work. There's something fitting about building a practice specialising in historic buildings in a place where history is quite literally around every corner — Roman walls, medieval streetscapes, timber-framed houses that have stood for five hundred years. Working here from the beginning gave us an early education in what it really means to alter an old building well.
Our Canterbury part of a unique group of related property based companies based at Latchmere House on Watling Street, and it's where the majority of our team is based. We work across Kent on all kinds of residential projects — extensions, conversions, interior alterations, barn conversions, new builds on rural plots — but listed buildings and period properties are where we spend much of our time. That's partly by design and partly because Kent has so many of them.
We know the local planning authorities well, and we've built long-standing relationships with conservation officers across the county. That matters when you're trying to get consent for a project in a conservation area or working on a listed building where the details of an application can make or break the outcome.
As a RIBA Chartered Practice we handle everything from the first sketch through to construction — and with structural engineering and heritage consultancy in-house, clients don't have to piece together a team themselves. We cover Canterbury and the wider county: Whitstable, Faversham, Ashford, Maidstone, Sandwich, Folkestone and the villages in between.
If you've got a project in mind, we're happy to talk it through. We offer a free telephone consultation with no obligation — just a proper conversation about what you're hoping to do and whether we can help.
We are a diverse team of professionals with years of experience in our specialist areas of expertise.
